Today Microsoft announced that effective June 30, 2010, Microsoft will discontinue future development of Windows Essential Business Server (EBS), the infrastructure solution we designed specifically for midsize businesses. This blog post is to specifically answer the question around whether the change affects other Microsoft solution products.

The short answer is, no.

In no way does today’s EBS announcement impact Windows Small Business Server, Windows Home Server and Windows Server 2008 and R2. 

Our decision to discontinue future plans for Windows Essential Business Server was based on several factors, but most notably in response to midsize businesses making a rapid shift towards technologies such as management, virtualization and cloud computing as a means to cut costs, improve efficiency, and increase competitiveness.  As it happens, those technologies are offered today through other Microsoft solutions, and midsized customers are adopting them, including Windows Server 2008 R2, Microsoft System Center, Microsoft Exchange Server, and the Microsoft Business Productivity Online Suite (BPOS). 

We believe that streamlining our server product portfolio will provide clarity for customers and partners to determine which option might be right for them.

Microsoft remains fully committed to small and medium-sized businesses. EBS customers can look forward to continued support and a number of options for continuing with EBS or transitioning to other technologies.

Wie bereits 2008 angekündigt, endet am 13. Juli 2010 der Microsoft-eigene Support für Windows XP Service Pack 2 (SP2) sowie für sämtliche Versionen von Windows 2000. Nur noch bis zum 13. April können Kunden mit originalverbliebenen Windows Vista-Versionen Ideen, Rat und Lebenshilfe bei Microsoft anfordern und Updates erwarten. Länger verfügbar ist der Support für Windows XP mit Service Pack 3 (SP3) oder für Windows Vista ab Service Pack 1 (besser natürlich gleich Service Pack 2). Dass Windows XP in der 64 Bit-Version kein Service Pack 3 mehr benötigte, gereicht Kunden dabei nicht zum Nachteil: Auch diese Windows-Version wird mit Stand Service Pack 2 noch bis zum 8. April 2014, also noch mehr als 4 Jahre lang unterstützt. Windows 2000 hingegen steht ab Mitte Juli supportseitig tatsächlich auf dem Abstellgleis: Mehr als 10 Jahre nach der Veröffentlichung des Windows NT4-Nachfolgers werden Migrationswillige jedoch im deutschsprachigen Windows 2000-Lösungscenter unterstützt. weiterlesen …

Das Beta 2-Release von Windows Server AppFabric, Codename „Dublin“, steht jetzt zum Download bereit. Die Application Services für die Optimierung von Performance, Skalierbarkeit und Management von Web-, Komposit- und Enterprise-Anwendungen sind mit der neuen, als „Feature Complete“ (also inhaltlich vollständig) bezeichneten Ausgabe nun auch angepasst an die Release Candidates von Visual Studio 2010 und .NET Framework 4. Aufgerufen zum Betatest sind vor allem Entwickler, die ASP.NET-, WCF- oder WPF-Anwendungen auf IIS erstellen. Die finale AppFabric-Version 1.0 soll nach Ihrem wertvollen Feedback auf Microsoft Connect oder im zugehörigen Forum im dritten Quartal bereitstehen.
